Spring Cleaning for Wine Lovers: A Fresh Start for Your Wine Fridge, Racking, and Cellar

Spring Cleaning for Wine Lovers: A Fresh Start for Your Wine Fridge, Racking, and Cellar

There is something clarifying about spring. It is the season that invites you to take stock, to open doors, to look at what has accumulated over the winter months and decide what deserves attention. For wine lovers, that includes the spaces where your collection lives. Whether you are managing a compact set of wine fridges in the kitchen or a dedicated wine cellar built to last decades, a seasonal reset is one of the most valuable things you can do for your wine.

At Rosehill Wine Cellars, we have spent over 30 years helping collectors care for their wine properly. Here is how to approach spring cleaning with the same intention you bring to the wines themselves.

Start with Your Inventory

Before anything else, take stock of what you have. A proper inventory is the foundation of a well-cared-for collection, and spring is the natural moment to bring it up to date. Go through your bottles and log each one using a tool like CellarTracker or InVintory, or a well-kept cellar journal if you prefer the analog approach. For each bottle, record:

  • Producer and wine name

  • Vintage year

  • Region and varietal

  • Quantity on hand

  • Purchase date and approximate price

  • Ideal drinking window and any personal tasting notes

As you handle each bottle, look closely. Check for cork seepage, lower-than-expected fill levels, or label damage. These are signs that something may have gone wrong with the seal or the storage environment. Set any suspect bottles aside for early opening rather than returning them to the rack.

Create an Open Soon Section

One of the simplest and most effective organizational habits a collector can build is a dedicated Open Soon section. Designate the most accessible part of your racking or fridge for bottles that fall within 12 to 18 months of their peak drinking window, per the back label or from the apps listed above. Place it at eye level, near the door, somewhere you reach naturally.

The goal is to prevent great bottles from slipping past their prime unnoticed, remove the decision fatigue of choosing a bottle for dinner, and create a natural rotation that keeps your collection feeling current. Spring is also a new release season, particularly for rosés and lighter whites. As you reorganize, think ahead about where those arrivals will go and free up space accordingly.

Deep Cleaning Your Wine Fridge

Your wine coolers maintain precise temperature and humidity conditions year-round, and they deserve the same care you give your collection. Once the unit is empty and your inventory is updated, work through the following:

  • Wipe down all interior surfaces. Use a warm water and white vinegar solution. Avoid chemical cleaners, which can leave residual odours that travel through corks over time.

  • Inspect the door gasket. Check for cracks or gaps that allow warm air to enter and force the compressor to work harder. Replace the gasket if the seal is no longer firm.

  • Dust the condenser coils. Usually located at the back or bottom of the unit. A soft brush or vacuum attachment is all you need. This one step can meaningfully extend the life of your fridge.

  • Clear the drip tray. A neglected drip tray becomes a source of odours inside the unit. Empty and rinse it thoroughly.

  • Recalibrate your temperature settings. For long-term aging, aim for 12 to 14 degrees Celsius. For wines you plan to enjoy within a few months, 16 degrees is appropriate.

Inspecting and Refreshing Your Wine Racking

Good wine racks do more than hold bottles. They protect labels, maintain proper orientation, and reflect the care and intention behind the collection they house. Spring is the right time to inspect yours thoroughly:

  • Check for wear. Look for moisture damage, warping, or cracking in wood racking, and rust or loose joints in metal. Minor issues are easy to address now and costly if left unattended.

  • Clean all surfaces. Wipe down wood racking with a slightly damp cloth and allow it to dry fully before restocking. For metal wine racks, a mild cleaning solution works well. Dry thoroughly to prevent moisture retention.

  • Reorganize with intention. Group bottles by region, varietal, or type and label sections clearly. Consistency matters more than the method you choose.

  • Plan for growth. If your collection has expanded beyond your current setup, our modern wine racking collection includes modular systems designed to scale with you.

Caring for Your Wine Cellar Before Summer Arrives

For collectors with custom residential wine cellars, the transition into warmer months places real demands on your cooling system and cellar environment. A few hours of attention now can protect years of careful collecting. Work through each of the following:

  • Test your cooling unit. Leave a wireless thermometer inside for 24 hours to confirm consistent temperatures. Listen for unusual sounds and check that exterior venting is clear of dust or obstructions. Our wine cellar cooling systems and CellarCool cooling units are built for reliable year-round performance, but seasonal attention matters. If your unit has not been professionally serviced in a few years, our Annual Maintenance Plan is the simplest way to stay ahead of any issues.

  • Inspect the cellar envelope. Walk the perimeter and look for moisture intrusion, condensation on walls, or cold spots near the door seal. Thermal leakage at the door is one of the most common causes of temperature inconsistency.

  • Check humidity. Use a hygrometer and aim for 50 to 70 percent, with 60 percent being ideal for long-term cork preservation. If humidity is running low, a small humidifier near the cooling intake can help. If it is running high, look for moisture sources such as pipe sweating or floor seepage.

  • Walk the cellar for odours. Wine corks are permeable, and a cellar with any mustiness is a risk to your collection. Remove cardboard boxes, food remnants, or anything with a strong scent that may have accumulated over winter.

  • Confirm your lighting is UV-safe. UV light is one of the quietest threats to aging wine. LED or UV-filtered fixtures are the standard for any serious cellar. While you are at it, consider whether any new vibration sources nearby could be affecting your bottles.
